What kind of games do you play?

We focus on two types of video games:

• Story-based games that give you lots of input (reading and listening)
• Games that require lots of teamwork and player-to-player interaction.

Basically any game that requires you to spend more than 50% of your time reading/listening or communicating with other players is a great option for learning languages. See Top Games for Learning Languages for some examples.

Do I have to buy the games? How much do they cost?

Yes, you will need to purchase the games. Most games cost between $10-$20. I have provided instructions on how to find discounted prices.

Do I need any special equipment? How much does it cost?

Depends on the game we are playing. Some games are simple and can be played on any computer, other games are more complex and require a stronger computer. I have provided instructions to test if your computer can run a certain video game.

Do I have to be good at playing video games?

You don’t have to be an expert but you need to know the basics of controlling your computer. Please let me know if you require assistance.

How will this help me learn English/Spanish?

You can practice communicating in English/Spanish with other people by working together. Each video game has unique challenges that will require you to use your English/Spanish to understand what is going on and advance to the next part of the game. Video games are one of the most useful and entertaining learning tools I have used to learn languages. It is, without a doubt, my favorite tool for learning languages.
