Intro

Anki keeps lots of information about your learning. This information is called Anki Stats. Some of the information included in Anki Stats:

  • How often you study (20% of days, 50% of days, etc.)
  • How many minutes you study per day, per month, etc.
  • How many flashcards you have accumulated and learned

This information is EXTREMELY useful. It teaches you about your habits and allows you to set measurable goals for your learning.

How to access Anki Stats

In the main window of Anki, click Stats.

IMPORTANT: In the Anki Stats window, click “collection” and “all history” at the top. This will make sure we are looking at the stats for all of your flashcards since the beginning.

Tutorial

The Anki stats page has a lot of information. I’m going to show you the most important information and how to understand it.

Calendar

In the calendar box, I can see a history of my most recent study sessions. I can hold my mouse over a particular day to see how much I studied that day.

Reviews

Here is information about your reviews. IMPORTANT: Make sure you click the time checkbox.

I can see I have studied 20 days for a total of 3.39 hours.

Card Counts

Card Counts shows you how many cards you have in your collection and how well you’ve learned them. The color blue represents the number of flashcards in your collection that you have not seen yet. The dark green color is the opposite: it shows you the number of flashcards you have passed many times. The light green color represents the number of flashcards you’ve passed only a few times.

More green is good, especially dark green.

Answer Buttons

This box shows me which buttons I press when I study. For normal people with normal brains, your chart should look like this.

Usually you will press the Good or Easy button. Sometimes you will forget words and you will press “Again.” If you never press again, then you are probably rushing and answering honestly. You are probably pressing “Good” even when you forget the word. This is not the correct way to study Anki. Anki doesn’t work well when you lie to it. Don’t lie to Anki. If you lie to Anki, you will eventually forget some of the words that you are trying to learn.

Extra Tips

Printing your Anki Stats

You can print your Anki Stats to pdf. I recommend posting your Anki stats next to your computer to remind yourself of the hard work that you are doing and where you are going. Seeing your progress grow each day will keep you motivated and focused on your goals.

To print your stats, click on Save PDF in the Anki Stats window.

“I don’t have time.”

If you can’t spend 15-20 minutes a day practicing your language a few times a week, then you may not have enough motivation or desire to learn. In that case, I recommend reading about my story and the stories of other successful language learners for inspiration. You may want to reconsider your priorities and decide if learning a new language is really important to you right now. Maybe it would be better to put this aside until you have more time and energy to dedicate to it.
