If you’re starting to learn a new language, the Pimsleur audio course is one of the best resources to give you fast and satisfying results in a short amount of time. Using this program, within 3-6 months, you can learn enough to have short conversations on a variety of topics. I’ve personally used Pimsleur for both Japanese and Spanish. I completed their entire 90-lesson course in both languages and got excellent results. It’s the first thing I recommend to anyone who is just starting to learn a new language.
How Does the Pimsleur Method Work?
The Pimsleur method is based on proven principles of language acquisition and revolves around spaced repetition and active recall. It helps you remember words and phrases by having you repeat them at gradually increasing intervals, making it easier to retain and recall them later. Each lesson builds on the previous one, helping you solidify your knowledge and use it in practical conversation.
The real magic of Pimsleur is how it incorporates recall into conversation-based exercises. Rather than bombarding you with vocabulary lists or grammar rules, you are asked to listen and respond to prompts as if you were having a conversation. This approach helps reinforce not just the words themselves but also how they are used in context. It’s incredibly effective for both beginners and those looking to refine their speaking skills.
What is the Format of the Course?
Pimsleur divides its courses into manageable units to make learning less overwhelming. The standard course is made up of three units, each containing 30 lessons for a total of 90 lessons. Each lesson is 30 minutes long, making it easy to fit into a busy schedule.
The lessons are audio-based, so all you need is a pair of headphones and a little quiet time to focus. While listening, you’ll be prompted to respond out loud, which forces you to engage with the material and practice speaking.
Where can I get the course?
The Pimsleur App (paid)
These days, Pimsleur has made an app that you can use to access their language courses. Although this may be the most convenient option, it’s also the most expensive.
SPANISH:
ENGLISH:
At your library (free)
This option is not so convenient, but it is free.
Many libraries have this course on CD. Search your local library’s catalog for “Pimsleur Spanish. ” The cover of the CD looks like this.

Obviously, the disadvantage is that you have to have a CD player to listen to it. You could rip the files from the CD using software, and then put the files on your phone. Unfortunately, most computers these days don’t have CD drives. However, most libraries have CD drives that you can rent. You can plug the CD drive into your computer, put the CD in, and then copy the files to the computer.
On the internet
You can download the Pimsleur audio files for free on tons of websites. This is the easiest option. I can’t post any links here because technically it’s not legal to share freely on the internet. If you simply search on Google “Pimsleur Spanish download,” you will find many websites where you can download the files for free. You can put these files on your phone and listen to them.
Tips to Get the Most Out of the Course
Many people don’t follow the instructions and then complain later that it didn’t work. If you don’t follow the instructions, you don’t really know if it works because you didn’t actually do it. Although the Pimsleur course comes with instructions, I’m going to repeat and emphasize a few critical things that will help you get the most out of your experience.
Active Listening vs. Passive Listening
The key to success with Pimsleur is active listening. That means fully engaging with the material by repeating out loud, answering questions, and pausing the audio to think through responses. During your first listen of any lesson, always prioritize active participation. You will learn a lot more this way. You’ll basically be talking to yourself in another language. I know it sounds kind of crazy, but it’s quite fun when you realize how much you are improving your language skills.
Passive listening can be useful as well, especially for review purposes. If you’re on a walk or doing chores and can’t fully engage, you can use passive listening to reinforce lessons you’ve already completed. While you won’t get as much benefit from passive listening, it’s still better than nothing and can help keep the language fresh in your mind.
Since you’ll be talking to yourself while listening to these lessons, you may not want to be around other people while you do it. It depends on you. Maybe if you’re with your family at home, you can study without any distractions or embarrassment. It is probably a lot more difficult to focus if you’re on a bus or in a quiet waiting room. In that case, your only option is passive listening.
Finish the Course!
A big tip: Actually finish the course. Pimsleur is designed to be effective when you follow through and complete it. The 90-lesson structure makes it manageable to finish within 6 months if you stay consistent. Don’t give up halfway or expect miracles after only a few lessons. You can’t say it didn’t work if you don’t do the work! Stay committed, trust the process, and you’ll see results.
Final Thoughts
Pimsleur isn’t just about learning vocabulary or grammar—it’s about developing real-world conversational skills that you can start using almost immediately. It’s a method that fits well into a busy lifestyle, and its results speak for themselves. If you’re serious about picking up a new language and want a flexible, effective way to do it, Pimsleur is one of the best choices out there. Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to refresh your skills, this course will set you up for success in just a few months.
